What is a Personal Support Worker / Human Services Counsellor?  Where do they work?

Personal Support Workers (PSWs) and Human Services Counsellors (HSCs) provide a high standard of care to New Brunswick’s children and families, adults living with disability and the aging population. These occupations are the essential backbone to a successful health, mental health and social support system. They work in partnership with other professionals to deliver person-centered care, so individuals can actively participate in their community, live safely in their own home or in a residential care setting.  

PSWs and HSCs are regularly employed in nursing homes, adult residential facilities, group homes, hospitals, community support agencies or with companies that provide in-home support.

An individual looking to forward their career requires a high school diploma or GED to be considered for training in the public / private training institutions.

Does the training need to be recognized or approved in order for it to be eligible under the Labour Force Training Program?

The training program will need to be recognized by Social Development and/or the Apprenticeship and Occupational Certification branch.

Is internal or “in-house” training eligible under the Labour Force Training Program?
