Students will assist crew leaders with smolt tracking and estimate programs for Atlantic Salmon in the Miramichi River. This involves collecting and sorting smolts from our smolt wheel, and then assisting with tagging, recovery, transportation, and eventual release of the fish. The fish movements downstream will be tracked using acoustic technology. In June, students will be involved in the salmon fry stocking program, which involves releasing small groups of fish back into their natal streams at various locations around the Miramichi Watershed. In July and August, students will assist with cold water habitat enhancement and maintenance, which involves taking temperature readings, determining fish presence, and collecting habitat data. Students will assist with our juvenile assessment program through electrofishing throughout the watershed in July and August. Students will assist with educational programming including First Cast (teaching youth how to fly fish) and Fish Friends.
