From first job to thriving career: Alyshia Gavin’s journey
Meet Alyshia Gavin. Back in October 2024, she enrolled in the Early Childhood Education program at NBCC. Alyshia had never worked before and was balancing significant personal responsibilities while caring for her father. Throughout the program, she received Training and Skills Development (TSD) funding which allowed her to maintain her living expenses and care for her family at just 18 years old.
Upon entering employment, Alyshia initially struggled to find her footing and received feedback that she needed to be more assertive and take greater initiative in the workplace. With determination and support from her WorkingNB Employment Counsellor, she completed her training, built confidence, and strengthened her workplace skills.
Today, Alyshia is thriving in her role at YMCA of Greater Saint John, where her employer reports she is doing very well.
Alyshia’s success is a powerful example that perseverance supported by the right plan and services can really make a difference.
